A175: Introduction to Audio Signal Processing

In this lecture we will explore how to represent sound as a waveform and how we can use computers to manipulate and transform these waves to create our own unique sounds. We will use Pure Data, an open source visual platform, to test and visualize the sounds we are making. Topics include Sinusoids, Audio Visualization, and Additive Synthesis.

E177: Smartphones Replaces PC, Then What Will Replace Smartphones?

Our digital world has evolved over multiple generations. We have witnessed how smartphones replaced PC to become the dominant personal computing devices. But what will happen after smartphones? In this course, I will introduce some science-fiction quality research that incubates the next-generation mobile devices and Internet-of-Things. Examples include indoor-GPS, battery-free sensors, and wireless communication devices that carry information through laser-like beams.

Would Iron Man actually make his suit out of iron? Absolutely not. Is Iron Man’s mortal enemy oxygen? Absolutely. We will be diving into the science behind the strongest materials throughout history and what makes them so special. The materials we use to build our battle armor, bridges, and buildings are the often forgotten foundation of our society and history. The Bronze Age began when an ancient materials scientist combined two soft metals, copper and tin, to create an alloy that was stronger and tougher than any material that had ever come before. The Industrial Revolution was made possible by processing iron and carbon together to create STEEL, a real engineering material. We wield steel to construct massive factories, bridges, and skyscrapers that make up the modern world. However, these engineering materials are susceptible to attack from the oxygen in the air we breathe. What power does oxygen have to weaken these strong materials over time, and how can we protect them?

In this course, we'll answer all of these questions and more as we take a tour through the fascinating development of human medicine--from the ancient Greeks to the modern age and much in between. Along the way, we'll meet some of the "giants" of medicine, learn about major scientific breakthroughs, and of course, learn a little bit about how the body works.

In the voting system you're used to ("Plurality"), we ignore a lot of useful information by only asking voters to pick their favorite candidate. This leads to problems like vote splitting - a candidate that most people hate could win with just 10% of the vote as long as 10 other candidates split the remaining 90%. In this class we will compare the other voting systems that become possible if voters supply their full preferences instead of just their favorite.

M174: Analyzing Programs is Not Possible! (or is it?)

Some problems aren't just difficult for computers, they're impossible! Starting only with simple assumptions about what computer programs can do, we'll show that you can't reliably detect when a program has an infinite loop. Using that we'll prove Rice's Theorem, a shockingly powerful statement about the impossibility of many problems we might like to solve.

S182: Videogames, A.I., Information, and the Human Machine

What could A.I. and technology tell us about ourselves? What exactly is information? How do we play games and what motivates us to play them? How do videogames reflect our brains and our cultural ideas?

Using Norbert Weiner's work on cybernetics, Wittgenstein, and current cognitive science topics, we will discuss these abstract ideas and try to understand them through the lens of mathematics, philosophy, and cognitive science. We will use the games as tools to see these ideas.

Please note that this class explores human behavior, which includes violence and sexuality. There will be no explicit content, but there will be discussion on how games present these topics and why.

Social scientists have studied many facets of women's under-representation in science and engineering fields. This class will give a quick tour of some fascinating studies, including women in STEM in the U.S. versus outside of the U.S., different patterns of negotiating and time management between men and women, and gendered patterns of interruptions in conversation and in academic talks. Students will have a better understanding of the issues as well as some practical tools for thriving in STEM fields.

S207: How Our Brain Gives Us Superpowers

Here we'll take an expansive journey around the brain together, from micro to macroscopic, exploring all the different aspects of neuroscience. From the molecular view, we'll discover axons firing to create signals. From there we'll zoom back out to a cognitive science approach to see how processes such as emotion and memory are created in our brain (while also working together discover what amazing things our individual brains can do). We'll then continue our journey in order to answer the question: "what can your brain truly do?"

S209: Movement for Physics

The language of physics is beautiful, elegant... and sometimes confusing, when it comes to its many complex concepts and mathematics. But physics is about motion, so why not use motion to understand physics? Each class will explore a movement-based practice to explore key physics concepts, such as what an electromagnetic field is and how photons make there way through the Sun through random walks. Deepen your understanding of physics with fun movement exercises!

Previous or current enrollment in a physics class is recommended but not required. Students will expect to perform movement exercises, and we will work to accommodate students with physical disabilities

S212: Quantum Tic Tac Toe

In the world we are familiar with, you can only be in one place at a time. However, subatomic particles, such as electrons and photons, "live in" the world of quantum mechanics (QM) and have some probability of being anywhere!

In this course, you will get an introduction to QM by playing tic tac toe! You will learn a modified version of the game that will both give you a tour of the physical laws of the QM world and be lots of fun!

It is helpful if you have taken at least one year of chemistry, or are currently finishing up your first year of chemistry. However, it is not necessary to learn and enjoy quantum tic tac toe!

S216: DNA repair- What happens when DNA breaks? Full!

DNA is essential for life; it's a key building block that encodes the information to make all living things. But what happens when catastrophe strikes, when this key molecule breaks? Will your DNA now code for a lemon? The answer is no- your cells have developed ways to repair DNA.

DNA repair can fix either intentional breaks (one reason for variation between people) or accidental breaks (if left unfixed, they are some of the reasons we get diseases like cancer).

While we know that malfunctions in DNA repair can contribute to cancer, recent medical research has shown that this malfunction can also be a source of vulnerability and a target for cancer therapy.

You'll get a crash course on how cells fix different types of DNA damage and how different DNA repair processes are associated with diseases and therapies.

Actually, it doesn't matter because you will find that college is a lot different than high school and that your success in high school might not apply to college.

Most of the decisions that you will make during your first year in college will most likely define how your college experience will be. The independence to make your own choices and the numerous critical decisions that will define your future might be nerve-wracking to some students.

But don't worry, in this class, we will go over some useful tips on how you can make the most out of your college experience, along with some insights from upperclassmen that have already gone through most of their college career.

X213: Search and Rescue

When hikers and mountain climbers go missing or get hurt, how do we find and rescue them? Typical emergency response resources (police, fire, EMS) don't have the training to operate in hazardous alpine environments, so searches in the US are mostly conducted by skilled volunteers.

This class gives a sample of the techniques used in volunteer search and rescue, from human tracking to helicopter short hauls and technical rope systems.
